My Father Built Us a House
MY FATHER BUILT US A HOUSE
Debbie Zepick
My father built us a house
From sticks and from stones
He made it strong
When he was done
My mother made it a home
When the winter would come
We were safe and secure
And we laughed and we grew
In the house my father built
My parents built us a home
Out there on the plain
They planted some trees and prayed it would rain
And when things were dry, they’d start over again
And we watched what they’d do
In the home my parents built
And everything they taught us was true
And they made sure that we always knew
Their hearts were open,
My father made us a fence
That we stayed inside
We’d swing on the swing
and slide down the slide
And all through the summer
We’d run and we’d hide
But we knew to stay inside
The fence my parents built
And everything they taught us was right
And then one day to our delight
The gate was open
The gate stood open
My parents build us a home
To withstand the storm
A something so right
In all that is wrong
Now we sleep somewhere else
But we know we belong
‘Cause we laughed and we grew
As we watched what they’d do
And love was what we knew
In the house my father built
